PURPOSE

BerlinX is a deep-dive into cross-cultural ministry experience for people who have experienced a call to urban, post-Christian / post-secular disciple-making. It’s a collaborative training process led by the MultiplyBerlin leadership team, driven by our vision of the transformation of the spiritual landscape of Europe through catalyzing a movement of disciple-makers in Berlin and beyond.

BerlinX cohorts are a proving ground and a chance for hands-on training.

During the BerlinX experience, you will:

  • Receive experience in cross-cultural discipleship

  • Engage in rich Gospel community

  • Be mentored and discipled by our leadership team

  • Experience the movement with your hands, feet, and heart

  • Learn to pray more intensely

  • Learn conversational German

TRAINING THROUGH ACTING

BerlinX teams are trained through active learning. This is not an academic approach to ministry—we want to see disciples making disciples now. Participants are immersed in an environment with numerous opportunities to immediately apply the principles they are learning.

Along the way, the cohorts will work through a variety of topics such as:

  • Abiding in Christ

  • Discipleship

  • Disciple-Making Movements (DMM)/Church Planting Movements (CPM)

  • The Kingdom of God

  • Cross-cultural Communication & Contextualization

This is done by way of on-the-job-training coupled with monthly reading assignments, group discussions and training, and mentoring.

INTENSIVES

The cohort may participate in training intensives. Intensives are extended times of concentrated training (multiple days long) on a particular topic or skill, often in concert with other organizations or networks. Any intensive the cohort participates in will be directly related to the purpose and goals of better training and equipping participants in DMM or cross-cultural ministry.

 COMMITMENT

For approximately nine - ten months, the BerlinX team is trained in an urban disciple-making ministry, which includes learning German, living in community, and ministering to the 193 nations living in Berlin. Participants are mentored and coached through relationships with our leadership team.

The core commitments for a participant are:

  • Weekly language learning and culture acquisition assignments⁺

  • 3-4 hours weekly participating in a large group gathering (the Collective⁺⁺)

  • 3+ hours weekly abiding with Jesus

  • ≥2 hours weekly out in the harvest with MultiplyBerlin and/or cohort members

  • ≥1+ hour weekly praying with other cohort members

  • ≥2 hours weekly reading assigned books

  • Monthly update to prayer partners

  • Regular meetings with an assigned mentor

This commitment is primarily for those entering Germany for the BerlinX cohort.

⁺⁺Once a week, members get together for a gathering called the Collective. The Collective is a time when leaders and participants study the Bible together, discuss the assigned readings, plan the next stages of ministry, pray, and embolden one another. It’s a space for each person to share what God has been doing in his or her life and prepare to head back out into the harvest each week for the work God has given them.

APPLY

HOW DO I APPLY

At this point, we require all cohort participants to come through a sending organization. If someone is interested in the cohort and not already on staff with a sending organization, that is the first step. We recommend: Greater Europe Mission, Novo, or Pioneers, but are potentially open to others as well.

Please use this interest form to contact us for more information about applying to BerlinX.

 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS THE DURATION OF THE BERLINX PROGRAM?

BerlinX cohorts typically run parallel to a typical U.S. American school year calendar, beginning in late August/early September and ending in late May or June. There is an option to raise extra support and stay through the summer to work on our summer projects, but the cohort officially ends in late May/early June.

CAN I JOIN A COHORT AS A LOCAL? WHAT IF I HAVE A FULL-TIME JOB OR I’M A STUDENT IN BERLIN?

Yes, but please know that the cohort process is ideally suited for those coming from outside Germany in mind who will attend language school and have culture acquisition assignments weekly. If you have a job or are a student already in Berlin, the other time commitments will still apply.

WHAT DOES AN AVERAGE WEEK LOOK LIKE?

In addition to the 18-20 hours of language learning, there is a 3-4 hour gathering once a week called the Collective. Throughout the week, cohort participants will be out in the harvest sharing Jesus with people, completing assigned Bible and book readings, and doing life with other participants and the MultiplyBerlin team.
